Puppies of Promise, Spokane is a puppy raising group in Spokane, WA. We raise puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind! Change a life, raise a guide dog puppy!

What We Do...

We raise guide dog puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind. We get the puppies at 8-9 weeks old and keep them till they are 14-16 months old.
After this they go to "doggy college" and train for about 2 months in harness and then get paired with a partner and train with the blind person for another 2 weeks. Guide Dogs has 2 campuses one is in Boring, OR and the other in San Rafael, CA.

Founded:

Mikelyn Ward founded Puppies of Promise in 1996 and the group got their first 3 puppies in December of 1996. Since then, Mikelyn has raised 15 puppies and been the leader since. She has only had 1 puppy move into a life as a guide dog. His name is Hoagan and is a male Golden Retriever. He currently lives in Tuscan, AR. The group has had up to 10 puppies at a time and 2 at the least. In total, 94 puppies have been raised and are being raised in POPS since 1997. POPS has had only had 4 puppies become breeders in all of the club history. 23 of the 94 puppies raised and being raised in POPS so far have graduated as breeders or guide dogs. The first 3 puppies in the group were Sal, Shara and Trudy.

Puppies of Promise, Spokane is a local puppy raising group for Guide Dogs for the Blind.
Guide Dogs has a training facility near Portland, Oregon and one in San Rafael, California.
Guide Dogs' "BEST" training program is the industry standard for dog training
and its system of in-home, postgraduate support is unique among
guide dog schools. Guide Dogs maintains a lifelong commitment to each of its
dogs to ensure appropriate, safe and loving placements. Our dogs and services
are provided free-of-charge to those we serve. Guide Dogs charges no tuition or
fees of any kind and receives no government funds.

General Information:
Meeting Schedule: POPS meets 3-4 times per month. We usually plan one outing per
month and several regular meetings.Regular meetings are on Sundays
from 3:00-4:30 PM and are held in the Eagles Hall, E 315 Francis, Spokane, WA
99207. Outing times and places vary. Check the calendar for the current schedule.
